Our services

We are experts in smart shipping. We offer a wide range of applied research services from feasibility studies and specific software and technology developments to testing of third-party systems. We offer you services in three areas: Cost-effective and high-quality R&D, excellence in maritime simulations & digital twins.

Cost-effective and high-quality R&D

We will gather an interdisciplinary team of professionals to develop solutions for your specific needs. We do not only test and develop prototypes – we also have a vision and the expertise all the way into productisation of technology solutions for the maritime industry. We offer you:

  • State-of-the-art facilities. FIP-S2@Novia provides a simulation-based and mixed-reality testing and development facility for quick and cost-efficient prototyping, validation, and verification of innovative ship solutions, tailored specifically to maritime market needs.

  • Productisation of technology. Our research and development processes are built on industrial practices and standards, with the final product in mind. We use state-of-the-art interfaces, software development kits, and real data, so that the journey from a promising prototype to a customised product is swift and cost-efficient.

  • Realistic testing. With the unique combination of software and nautical expertise, we can develop and test your technology under realistic conditions with maritime professionals. We provide technical, human, and operational simulation all in one environment without the need for multiple integration.

  • An entry platform. FIP-S2@Novia also works as an entry platform for companies entering the maritime business. Do you have a promising business idea or a technology solution for the maritime market, but you need help in modifying it to the maritime industry needs? We are happy to help.

Excellence in maritime simulations

Maritime simulators are an excellent tool for research, development, and testing. With simulators you can examine for instance new marine technology, human-machine interaction, vessels with various levels of autonomy, and general human factor issues. We offer you:

  • A test bed for operational simulations. FIP-S2@Novia has a variety of operational simulators for development and testing for instance of ship performance, ship system operations, ship handling, human performance, ship interactions, traffic scenarios, maritime traffic management and ship systems.

  • A test bed for technical simulations. Simulators act as data sources and sinks for development and validation of nautical solutions by producing realistic maritime scenarios. Our centralised, standardised design enables simple integration of your systems to the existing testbed for quick testing under realistic conditions also in safety-critical situations.

  • Testing from ship to shore. Monitoring and control of vessels from shore stations is a rising trend in the maritime industry. We offer a test bed also for ship-shore interactions – how to set up the test bed, what kind of interfaces are needed and how to operate with different communication systems and in different situations.

  • Access to an international simulator network. We are part of the European and Asian-Pacific Maritime Simulator Network (EMSN and APMSN), which consists of 15 simulator centres around Europe and Asia. Within this network, large-scale tests can be implemented, not just to assess test effects on a single ship, but on ship traffic in general. Furthermore, as the network connects navigational experts from different regions of the world, cultural effects and acceptance are automatically included in the assessment process ensuring global acceptance.

Digital twins

Digital twin technology brings numerous possibilities to the maritime industry. A good simulation model acts as a base for a digital twin, but we also need real-time interaction with the real vessel or its systems. Thus, digital twins are dynamic virtual representations of their physical objects or systems, giving maritime actors access to real-time data on their vessels and operations.

Maritime simulators are useful environments for creating, testing, and developing digital twins for the maritime domain’s need. We offer expertise on research and development on the usability, operations, and functions of digital twins together with the customer. We offer you:

  • A neutral testing ground. FIP-S2@Novia already has a navigational digital twin set. We are building up a broad testing architecture of maritime digital twins and interfaces. The main challenge in digital twin development is that different systems and system providers do not interact with each other. FIP-S2@Novia will work as a neutral facilitator between different maritime industry actors that use the testing platform.

  • Hydrodynamic ‘digital twins’ for training and manoeuvring. FIP-S2@Novia is experienced in building hydrodynamic ship models for major maritime simulation manufacturers. They allow realistic training and testing opportunities for operative maritime professionals.

  • Digital twin validation. We can also validate companies’ own digital twin models against real-time data. We can provide testing data and testing simulators, as well as connections to data providers, real-time vessels and vessel systems.
