Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Smart Shipping at Novia University of Applied Science FIP-S2@Novia

Where innovative technology meets good seamanship

A Finnish-German applied research platform for the maritime industry on Novia’s maritime campus Aboa Mare in Turku, Finland

About FIP-S2@Novia

FIP-S2@Novia is an applied research platform on smart shipping for the maritime industry. With our unique combination of smart maritime technology expertise, operational maritime knowledge, and simulation know-how, we can solve a wide range of problems for maritime companies efficiently and cost-effectively – from researching and prototyping to modifying a finished product for the market.

FIP-S2@Novia is a joint initiative between Novia University of Applied Sciences and Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services CML. Platform is based on Novia’s maritime campus Aboa Mare.

Our services

We are experts in smart shipping. FIP-S2@Novia covers a wide range of applied research services from feasibility studies and specific software and technology developments to testing of third-party systems. We offer you services in three areas:

1.Cost-effective and high quality R&D

We have state-of-the-art facilities for developing and testing innovative maritime technology solutions in realistic conditions. We are experts in productisation of technology for the maritime industry needs. We can also help companies wishing to enter the maritime business.

2. Excellence in maritime simulations

We offer test beds for operational and technical simulations as well as ship to shore interactions. We are also part of the European and Asian-Pacific Maritime Simulator Network (EMSN and APMSN). That enables us to provide possibilities for large-scale testing of ship traffic in a multicultural environment.

3. Digital twins

We believe that maritime simulators are useful environments for creating, testing, and developing digital twins for the maritime domain’s need. We offer digital twin validation against real-time data. We are also building up a broad testing architecture of maritime digital twins and interfaces.

FIP-S2@Novia — a perfect match of expertise

FIP-S2@Novia brings an internationally unique set of services available to the maritime industry in Finland and in Northern Europe.

Novia, with its Aboa Mare Maritime Academy and Training Centre, is acquainted with the seafarer’s perspective. It has an extensive know-how on maritime operations, operational safety, and HMI testing. It has access to a wide range of maritime operational practices, through ongoing trainings with students and seniors. In addition, Novia has a wide range of simulators and tens of thousands of hours of test simulated data.

Fraunhofer CML is the maritime software technology expert. That includes the know-how on navigational algorithms, and on modelling hydrodynamics and sensor behaviour within simulators. It also has expertise in maritime machine learning, e.g. for detailed sea traffic assessments and two test vessels for smart ship operations.
